One of our most exciting things about this newly launched #HASHTAG blog is being able to share all of our fantastic IndieBOOMers with you. Our IndieBOOM clients are some pretty cool cats, and we absolutely have to introduce you to each of them.
We gave you a sneak peek of our B.Designs Paper branding and photography earlier this month, but today we're excited to introduce you to another of our IndieBOOMers, Talia Chai.
Talia, a wellness coach, came to us ready to start her biz, from the very beginning. I, Emily, was so struck by her for a number of reasons, one of which being that she understood the necessity of starting off with the best she could get (another being her amazing skin; she knows what she's doing). For her starting her biz off right was starting with IndieBOOM, so that she could build a cohesive, concise, and strategized brand from the very beginning.
Here's more about Talia:
How (or why) did you start your own biz?
WHY: I started my own business because I have always been a very passionate, independent person who believes in doing what you love and following your dreams. Also, my dream job, which combines many passions, doesn't really exist! So I had to create it for myself.
HOW: My business is BRAND new. The website component is in development right now, however I recently opened up an in-person Nutrition Practice in Toronto, Canada. So I'm still in the pre-development/early-development stages.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in owning your own biz?
1. This is much more than a 9-5 job. Honestly, the work never really ends. But creating something for myself has been one of the most gratifying and motivating feelings I've ever experienced.
2. Take advantage of the pre-development/-early development phase of your business when your client list is still very small. Use the extra time to work on all other areas of your biz. This time is a luxury, you'll probably never have it again. If you use it correctly, when your client list starts growing, you'll have all of your systems in place and everything will run more smoothly.
What are the best business tools that you use?
This is going to sounds INSANE but last year my laptop was stolen and I have yet to replace it. This means that I have been doing 95% of all my work on an iPad!! So at this point I absolutely could not live without my iPad.
My favourite apps right now are:
Evernote-I basically use this as my word processing app
Setmore-For booking client's appointments
Pinterest-Best vision board tool ever! I use this for everything from typography inspiration to work-wardrobe inspiration.
In detail, describe a typical day at your biz:
Wake up. Do yoga. Drink lots of water
Shower & get dressed
Make a smoothie
Either work from home or at my nutrition office
Run errands
Have a networking "coffee" (or tea or juice)
meeting or meet a friend and go for a walk
Lunch
Work on my biz or meet with a client
Dinner
Work on my biz or meet with a client
Pry myself away from my iPad and go to bed! (I'm trying to squeeze some unwinding, technology-free time in before bed)
How did you know it was time to make a big investment in your biz?
I had been working professionally in the health/food/beauty industry for four years. But really, I've been immersed in these areas since I was a little girl. It's how I grew up. So I knew, based on my education and experience that I was ready. I had always wanted to do my own thing but I let fear and doubt stop me for years. I finally decided it was now or never-I didn't want to waste any more time-so I made the leap and went ALL-IN on my biz.
What do you hope IndieBOOM will do for your biz?
Help me establish clear, beautiful branding
Build an awesome e-commerce website
Help me establish myself as an EXPERT in my field
Help me develop an efficient system for productivity and how to create editorial content
Help me narrow-in on and fine-tune my offerings
Help me create an overall, INCREDIBLE platform to market myself and my services, attract my Dream Customers and generate sales
As we begin finalizing pieces of Talia's online presence puzzle, you better bet that we'll be sharing them here, allowing you to follow Talia's process from her very green beginnings, to some seriously professional design and positioning. Stay tuned!
