Unlike so many of my creative pals, I don't read a ton of business books. And by "a ton" I mean I don't read any.
I'm a business book scanner. Skimmer. Flipper througher.
When I'm at work, I'm working. When I'm reading, I'm reading for pleasure. It's just how I work. I can't focus on business books.
Sure, I read/scanned Fire Starter Session, Desire Map, Right-Brain Business Plan, and others, but I can only think of two business books that I found myself engulfed in, and hanging onto every word.
Rework, and this one: Start Something that Matters.
I wrapped this book up on the plane ride to Tulum last month, and I find myself thinking about it and talking about it a little too much to be sane.
It's written by Blake Mycoskie, the mover, shaker, and creator behind TOMS Shoes.
And this book is magical.
My biggest takeaway is to not play by the rules. Blake started a for-profit charitable business, and got laughed at. And then blew everyone away, creating one of the most well-known and respected brands in current American culture.
And he instilled an idea of giving to current entrepreneurs that few others in history have had the capacity to do, birthing a generation of small businesses who make giving back a part of business, not a by-product of it.
Unconventional has become the norm, and rules are being broken.
And I like it.
This book is a good, short read, and crazy empowering. If you haven't already added this to your business library, buy it now. It's a keeper.
